When an energy community has more electricity than consumers

A citizens' energy community in Niederösterreich is currently facing an unusual challenge: it generates more electricity than its existing members can consume, and is therefore actively seeking new consumers. This may sound paradoxical at first, but it reflects a real growth problem faced by many energy communities in Austria: generation often scales faster than membership numbers. For interested parties, this is good news, because anyone joining such a community now benefits directly from existing generation capacity without having to invest themselves. At DEA, too, we see that a balanced ratio of producers and consumers is crucial so that as much electricity as possible can be used locally instead of being fed into the public grid. Anyone wanting to check whether their own household or business would fit as a consumer into an existing community should above all look at the grid area and the load profile. These are exactly the kinds of questions we at DEA continuously address in dialogue with our members.
