A new pilot project is bringing a social dimension to the energy transition: Salzburg Research, Enixi, Our Power and Robin Powerwood are jointly testing how surplus solar power from energy communities can be specifically forwarded to households at risk of poverty. The idea behind this is simple, but has so far barely been implemented systematically: anyone who generates more PV power in an energy community than is needed themselves can not only sell or store this surplus, but also donate it. For the DEA, this is food for thought, as it shows how citizen energy can create social benefit beyond mere cost savings. Particularly in times of volatile electricity prices, the question of who actually benefits from the expansion of photovoltaics is gaining in importance. For our members, the core remains the same: anyone who joins an energy community reduces their own electricity bill through regionally generated power – but models like this one show what additional possibilities the concept offers.
