New platform aims to simplify the establishment of energy communities

A new, cross-provincial platform aims to make founding and joining energy communities in Austria easier in the future. Until now, the effort required for interested parties was often high: clarifying legal form, finding members, coordinating grid area, and coordinating registration with the grid operator and regulator. This is precisely where digital tools come in, standardizing administration and billing and thus lowering the entry barrier. For the DEA, a nationwide citizen energy community with a focus on Wien and Niederösterreich, this is a welcome step, since a lower bureaucratic hurdle means more potential members and more locally used electricity. At the same time, the experience of existing communities such as StRegional, which already connects around a thousand members, shows that digital infrastructure alone is not enough – personal advice and a functioning network of producers and consumers remain crucial. Anyone interested in joining can, regardless of the platform chosen, first find out about their own metering point number and the responsible grid operator.
